Overview

The Darlington Golf Course Driving Range project was a significant undertaking aimed at improving the golfing experience for residents in Bergen County, New Jersey. The project involved replacing the existing 100-foot wooden support poles with 150-foot modern steel poles and installing a thicker, high-strength polyester breakaway netting system. The objective was to extend play time for golfers and offer a country club experience at public course prices. The total renovation was expected to cost approximately $5.98 million, with a return on investment (ROI) projected to be realized within five years of completion. The cost of the driving range netting system by Gorilla Netting was $3 million.

Challenge

The driving range at Darlington Golf Course faced several challenges before the renovation project began. The wooden support poles were severely damaged from snow and wind storms, leading to a need for replacement. Additionally, the existing netting system was aging and did not provide the level of safety and durability required for the range. As a result, the driving range was temporarily closed for renovation, impacting the golfing experience for residents in the area.

Solution

Gorilla Netting, an international netting contractor specializing in sports and barrier netting systems, was awarded a contract to design, engineer, and install the new driving range netting system. The new system included a breakaway safety feature that allowed the netting panels to breakaway from the supporting wire rope (cables) and poles in the event of high winds or severe snow and ice loads during winter storms. This safety feature reduced the risk of damage to the netting, the integrity of the poles and cables throughout the netting system, and the surrounding property.

The new driving range, which was roughly 700-feet-long with pole heights reaching 150-feet high, also featured a slightly larger footprint and added ball containment abilities. The steel poles and the breakaway netting system were designed to meet or exceed local building wind environmental/government codes, ensuring the safety and durability of the new installation.

Conclusion

The Darlington Golf Course Driving Range project was completed successfully, providing residents with an enhanced golfing experience. The new driving range, with its modern steel poles and breakaway netting system, not only extended play time for golfers but also offered a safer and more durable golfing environment. The project’s completion was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by county officials and marked a significant milestone in the county’s investment in golf.
