Overview

McRae Correctional Institution first reached out to Gorilla Netting in early 2018. The minimum-security correctional facility for men, located in Telfair County, Georgia, hired Gorilla Netting to install a security perimeter netting system for the mitigation of contraband into the facility.

Gorilla Netting’s security perimeter netting system for contraband mitigation would be the perfect product to get the job done. The turnkey barrier netting system is 1,335 feet long by 50 feet high integrated with new Class H-1 Wood Poles and 1” knotless polyester diamond mesh netting.

Gorilla Netting takes pride in ensuring our netting system structure is engineered by a licensed professional engineer and built to the local building wind code or higher. We also believe that High Performance and High Value should be demonstrated through the standards set by Gorilla Netting.

Challenge

Like many secure facilities, especially correctional facilities, McRae Correctional Institution is no different and faces the threat of contraband entry into their facility.

The dangers of contraband entry into secure facilities are manifold, posing significant risks to both the security staff and the inmates. The presence of contraband, such as illicit weapons, drugs, and cell phones, can lead to violence among inmates, drug abuse, and the commission of further crimes both within the facility and externally, such as organizing escapes or ordering crimes to be committed outside the prison. This not only jeopardizes the safety and well-being of those within the facility but also undermines the broader community’s security.

Moreover, the introduction of contraband, particularly through sophisticated means like drone deliveries, presents a unique challenge to correctional facilities. It requires constant vigilance and adaptation of detection and prevention strategies. The involvement of corrupt staff members in smuggling contraband further complicates the issue, as it erodes trust and undermines the integrity of the facility’s operations.

Overall, the prevention of contraband entry is crucial for maintaining order, safety, and the rehabilitation goals of secure facilities. It necessitates a combination of robust security measures, advanced detection technologies, and rigorous staff training and oversight.

Solution

The installation of barrier netting solutions has emerged as a critical measure to mitigate the entry of contraband into secure facilities. These solutions include custom-built security perimeter netting systems, and overhead netting systems for open air areas, designed to provide containment, exclusion, and protection against various methods of entry. This approach not only enhances the safety and security of the facility but also offers a cost-effective solution for managing potential risks.

The effectiveness of these barrier netting solutions relies on their ability to act as a physical deterrent, preventing unauthorized entry and the smuggling of illicit materials. They are particularly useful in situations where traditional security measures may be insufficient or circumvented. For instance, in locations where walls or fences are breached, the use of barrier netting can provide an additional layer of security, making it more difficult for contraband to be introduced.

Moreover, these netting solutions are versatile and adaptable, allowing for their deployment in various settings, including along borders, in correctional facilities, and at strategic points within a facility. They are designed to withstand environmental and physical stresses, ensuring their durability and effectiveness over time.

In conclusion, the installation of barrier netting solutions offers a practical and robust approach to mitigating the entry of contraband into secure facilities. By acting as a physical barrier and complementing existing security measures, these solutions significantly enhance the security and safety of the facility, providing a cost-effective and adaptable solution to a challenging problem.
